WildfireSight is advancing wildfire forecasting across Alberta with the Z1 model, a next-generation risk prediction system built on over 10 years of wildfire R&D and the expertise of multidisciplinary scientists from across Alberta. While Canada's Fire Weather Index (FWI) remains a trusted national standard, Z1 complements it by offering forecasts up to 182 days (6 months) in advance, helping industry, communities, and emergency planners make earlier, informed decisions.
Despite its youth, the Z1 model has shown a 60-80% accuracy rate in forecasting real wildfire occurrences. This performance was validated using a comprehensive historical wildfire dataset spanning 1970 to 2019, published by the Government of Canada, covering five decades of observed wildfire activity in Alberta.
Between June 22 and July 26, 2025, Z1 forecasted 65.2% of actual wildfire occurrences compared to the FWI's 55.4%, despite the longer forecast horizon, performance that underscores its potential as a valuable companion tool.
Launched in June 2025, our WebGIS platform delivers daily, map-based wildfire risk forecasts for thousands of industrial assets, supporting proactive safety measures, optimized resource allocation, and cost-effective mitigation. Backed by NRC IRAP and Alberta Innovates, and soon to be expanded across other Canadian provinces and U.S. states, WildfireSight is committed to working alongside existing systems to strengthen wildfire preparedness everywhere.
